Tiny Jesus

Tiny Jesus,
Tom thumb savior
novelty from a church gumball machine
rides in my pocket,
fits perfectly within my hand
when I reach in
grasping blindly  for… something.

Tiny Jesus slips
soft words between my lips when
thorns wait on my tongue.
When my heart is too crowded with pain
to encompass the full- sized  model,
there is still room for Tiny Jesus .
He never overwhelms me with issues
of guilt and redemption
doesn't lecture about  sin or salvation,
never bleeds in my pocket.
But when I clench my fist
in fear or anger
Tiny Jesus whispers
to let go.

Tiny Jesus
